If you choose to stay employed while pursing a certificate, associates or bachelor’s degree in accounting, the online option makes perfect sense for many as you can keep earning while you learn. If you are supporting a family, enrolling in an online accounting degree programs is a terrific option to improve your skills and climb the career ladder while not having to give up your current position.

But before you decide to enroll in any accounting program, you should ensure that you have completed all prerequisite courses prior to applying to a program. Often, accounting programs have pre–requisites such as math, sciences and English that must be completed prior to enrollment.

For certificate programs, the minimal educational requirement for entry into the program is typically a high school diploma.  Sometimes a GED certificate is also accepted as a prerequisite into an accounting certificate program. Completion of a certificate program can lead to employment as an accounting technician, and an associate’s degree may prepare you for a career as a bookkeeper. If you enroll in a certificate or associates’ degree program, ensure that your credits will transfer to a four-year program in case you decide to upgrade to a bachelor’s degree in accounting eventually.

If you have been out of school for a considerable period of time, the school to where you are applying for admission may ask you to complete some skill testing prior to acceptance. This is to ensure that you are being placed at an appropriate level. You may need to take some remedial courses to bring your skills up to an acceptable level before being accepted into an accounting program.

Make Sure Your Online Accounting Degree Program is Accredited

As with any online program of study, make sure that your online accounting degree program is fully accredited.  Accounting degree programs online should be accredited by The Associate to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, or at least by your state’s accountancy board. This is a very important step that you should take when considering a certain school. If the school you choose is not accredited, no employer will even consider you, and your expensive tuition will go to waste, not to mention the time it took you to complete the program.

To enter into a graduate program in accounting, an accredited bachelor’s degree is required, and many programs ask for a number of years’ work of work experience in the field before accepting a candidate into the program. Typically, entering into a graduate accounting program online also requires the applicant to have achieved at least a “B” average in their undergraduate courses. As well, a graduate school entrance exam is usually required such as the GRE or the GMAT test.

The job outlook for accountants is on the rise. This is a terrific career option, as you can specialize far beyond the CPA designation. You can become a forensic accountant who weeds out financial fraud, an internal auditor inside a large company or go on and complete an MBA degree in addition to your degree in accounting and become a Chief Financial Officer.
